Question:

Will taking notes in a job interview increase my chances of getting hired?

Today when I applied for a job there were five other people doing the same thing. I was the most professionally dressed person there. The rest of them dressed rather casually, I thought. I was also the only person to be taking notes while being interviewed. I need a job to support myself as I finish college. I'm graduating in less than a year. While we were being interviewed, I wrote down everything the gentleman had to say because I wanted him to think I was paying attention and what he had to say was important. I also asked him lots of questions about the job, too. I almost felt as if I was taking over the interview and interviewing him in the end. After we were through, I asked him for his business card which he gave me. The gentleman told me that he was going to see if he could have me set up for a second interview. I don't know if he was actually being sincere or telling me a white lie to avoid hurting my feelings. Can someone help me out?

  1. I don't suggest note taking during the interview to my clients. During the interview it is important to maintain good eye contact and build rapport. Taking notes can disrupt your ability to do this and many interviewers find it annoying.

I do, however, strongly recommend writing down anything of note as soon as you return to your car. The next thing you should do is write a thank you note to your interviewer. This would actually have a bigger impact than taking notes during the interview.

Best wishes for your career success!

  2. I've never heard of people taking notes in a job interview - and I am studying HR. It's not a class, and really he should have supplied you with the relevant information about the job prior to the interview, difficult to say without knowing the position... BUT if he's given you his card there is every chance that he will ask you back for a second interview - maybe relax a bit, I am not saying don't take the interview seriously or dress appropriately, but an interview is a way for the employer to get to know a little about you as a person, as well as any relevant skills etc you have for the position.

    Good luck

  3. If he told you he wants to see about a second interview, then he really meant it.  He wasn't trying to avoid hurting your feelings - people who do job interviews inevitably have to hurt a lot of people's feelings, and they're pretty good about being honest.  I think it sounds like you did a great job in the interview.  Being knowledgeable about and interested in the company is really, really good.  Asking a lot of questions is good.  So is taking notes and looking professional.  You also seem to have very good grammar and a good understanding of the mechanics of language, which is pretty rare these days.  That probably helped you in the interview as well.  Good luck!  I hope you get the job!

  4. i do believe the note taking was an overkill!!!
