Question:

Will the AFL act to stop teams protecting bottom spot?

The high number of lowly game winners makes me think that some clubs cling to bottom spot this year in particular because the next two years the best draft picks will be reserved for Gold Coast and West Sydney, and the rest of you will just have to moan and groan and bear it.

  1. The problem is that the "benefits" of finishing on or near the bottom of the ladder ( first and second draft picks, piority picks, etc etc  )  far outweigh the disadvantages.

And while the AFL can never "PROVE" that a team is tanking, deliberately losing, whatever-you-want-to call-it

everyone, in their cozy little offices in AFL house, KNOWS that its happens, and that it wont go away- even if publicly "it never ever happens" ( yeah right we all go)

    How to fix it??,

If I knew that I would sell it to the AFL for 100 million.

    And they would probably pay

    PS

didnt i hear somewhere that during the preseaseon cup, roosy told his players ( the swans)  to go forward, BUT NOT to kick a goal, so that they would be out of the preseason and able to focus on their round one game??

  2. Now that a WA team or two may benefit from the draft system the usual number of whingers come out & complain about how unfair the system is.

Why weren't you on the same track over the past few seasons? The Tigers, Blues etc have been sand-bagging something terrible to improve their draft picks.

Just because the Vics started the practice you shouldn't now begrude other teams from benefitting in the same manner.

  3. u better not be talking bout eagles..we would be at the top of the ladder if we could (cos we belong there). not this year lol...and tanking? umm no have u seen our players lately.. not very confident..look at geelong and what having confidence can do, thats y they win so d**n easy, but if they didnt have any confidence then they would be where we are.

  4. This was a topic of debate last year also, and probably every year back to when the draft began.

I think the problem is how does the AFL act? Unless they are given an email from CEo to Coach saying 'throw the game' the AFL would never be able to prove it and therefore can do no more than agrue agaisnt it publically, threaten anyone behind colsed doors they think may be tempted and hope its never proven to be happening.

  5. No - they won't do anything. How can you prove a team has tanked or not?

  6. Shhhhh, you've just revealed West Tank's gameplan for the next 4 years lol

  7. Well all I know is last year Carlton was tanking. But they still can't manage to get on the top of the ladder.

  8. It's not about stopping teams because that would be impossible. The only way to deal with it is to come up with some way of reducing the benefits of tanking.

I also don't think anyone should be groaning about benefits going to the two new teams. If the game is to become bigger around Aus. it has to expand especially in NSW. Although we love the Swans, one team can't take on the NRL.

  9. Yes.

  10. Yes, I think the priority picks system needs an overhaul. What has our game come to when teams are losing purposely to gain some young players? I think that the team that comes 9th on the ladder should get the 1st draft pick, since they tried, but didn't make the eight. The AFL needs to fix the system before the Gold Coast team enters the competition.

  11. **Something needs to be done about it but let's face it, how can the AFL prove that teams are tanking games, I just don't see it happening.**

  12. Put the  bottom 8 teams in a barrel and draw out who gets the number 1 draft pick, so on and so on. That would stop the tanking.

  13. hmm.....hard one.....with tanking going on.......NEEDS TO CHANGE!!!!

although TANKING got carlton up the ladder!
