Question:

Will the Back to My Mac feature in Leopard work remotely when my secondary computer is not on my home network?

I own a 1st gen. Aluminum case iMac, as well as a 2nd gen. MacBook, both of which are obviously running Leopard. I recently purchased MobileMe and would like to utilize my iMac's rather superfluous HD space, (for an incoming college student anyway,) by using it as my main HD for both computers, storing everything on the iMac and accessing said data remotely, from my MacBook when I need to. Is this possible? I've tried out the connecting to my iMac and doing the screen sharing while I was on my network, but will it work similarly when I'm miles away from my home network? Are there any settings I'll need to modify? Thanks for your time.

  1. Well, according to apple, that is what it is designed to do.

"With Leopard and a .Mac account, it's not only possible, it’s simple. Back to My Mac keeps an up-to-the-minute record of all your computers’ addresses on a .Mac server. So when you’re on the road, you’ll see your .Mac-registered computers in the Shared section of your Finder sidebar, just as they’d appear at home."

You will need to setup with the .Mac server but then your Home IP will be tracked and you should be able to connect.
