Question:

Will the British national anthem be changed?

Like at the moment it says "God save our gracious Queen" and the central theme about the anthem is all about the Queen. So when either Charles or William become King will the word Queen be changed to "King" acknowledging the change?

  1. OF COURSE

    ---------------------------

    * When the monarch of the time is male, beyond the other alterations mentioned above, the last line of the third verse is changed to "with heart and voice to sing/ God Save the King".

God Save the Queen (standard version)

        God save our gracious Queen,1

        Long live our noble Queen,

        God save the Queen:

        Send her victorious,

        Happy and glorious,

        Long to reign over us:

        God save the Queen.

        O Lord, our God, arise,

        Scatter her enemies,

        And make them fall.

        Confound their politics,

        Frustrate their knavish tricks,

On Thee our hopes we fix,

        God save us all.

        Thy choicest gifts in store,

        On her be pleased to pour;

        Long may she reign:

        May she defend our laws,

        And ever give us cause

To sing with heart and voice

        God save the Queen.*

  2. Because there have been more kings than queens since this dirge of a national anthem was written, it has been 'God Save the King' for most of its career.  No doubt it will be again - unless it were to be replaced with something more uplifting - perhaps 'I vow to thee, my country' (difficult to sing, but lovely words) or, now that Britain is a federal state, Blake's 'Jerusalem', with which we could sing the house down!

  3. Probably, but then that means that the national anthem isn't stable because it has to change to suit the royal in charge of the country.

  4. The word is always changed according to the s*x of the monarch
