Will the Dallas Cowboys play better in the 2011 National Football League season?
One player who cannot wait for the 2011 National Football League season to get started is Dallas Cowboys’ quarter-back Tony Romo. A broken collarbone cost him participation in the final ten games of the 2010 season after being driven to the turf by New York
Giants’ Lamar Woodley. The Cowboys quarter-back coach Wade Wilson says that Romo’s delivery and velocity are right back where they should be.
Select coaches from the Cowboys spent some time with the media last Thursday with Rob Ryan, their new defensive coordinator, saying, “This league’s tough… and the ball doesn’t always bounce your way [but] that doesn’t mean that we can’t come back from it
and have one of the best units this year and that’s what we’re going to have.”
He went on to say, “The biggest thing is that I’m here to win and with the players we have and staff we have… we’re here to win and that’s what we’re going to do.”
It’s safe to say that Ryan inherited Dallas’ talented, but underachieving team from a year ago. But how much of a difference will Ryan be able to make?
In my opinion, Ryan will be able to make a huge difference on the Cowboys. One might argue that Ryan could be the biggest transition on the Cowboys in the offseason. What he did with the Cleveland Browns was kind of swept under the radar because he coached
a defence that made a huge impact in wins against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. They forced three turnovers in that game and also played very well against the Super Bowl XLIV champions, the New Orleans Saints. They had four interceptions off of their
quarter-back, Drew Brees, and returned two of them for touchdowns. So basically, the defence singlehandedly won those games.
He will make a huge difference to the Cowboys’ defence since the team gave up a lot of point scoring last season. There are several reasons why you think the Cowboys will become contenders right away on the offensive side of the ball. First of all, when
you look at their skilled position players, such as Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and Roy Williams, they are all in their 20’s. Felix Jones and Tashard Choice are also in their 20’s.
All of these young players have proved themselves already and will hopefully have long careers ahead. Jason Witten has been on the team a long time, eight years now, but he is still only 28-years-old. Most of their offensive line is around 30 years of age
so you do not have to worry about breaking in new players. Yes, left tackle Doug Free is 27-years-old but he has been the starter for about a year and a half now, so he is going to be much more comfortable going in.
But what it comes down to will be Romo. There is a sense in quarter-backs that when you get into your 30’s, you start to get the job done. Add on top of it that he is coming off of an injury and you have one determined player. So now you realise as a player
that the team is going on without me, so now there is an even greater sense of urgency on his part. The fact that Jason Garrett is now the head coach will create more discipline and attention to detail for Romo.
But we cannot say anything for sure until it happens. Just hope that a new collective bargaining agreement can be decided soon so that there is a 2011 NFL season.
