Will the Ford Sync work with a GPS in the future? Will it have open upgrades from Microsoft?

I'm looking at purchasing a 2008 Focus with the Sync system installed. I like it's media and phone functionality but I really want it to be able to talk to a GPS unit. I know currently there is no GPS compatibility, but does anyone know if there are reports that either Ford or Microsoft will open the Sync to talk to USB or Bluetooth GPS units in the future?

My other question, since the Ford Sync is the house brand of the Microsoft Auto OS, will I be able to update it in the future using MS Auto if MS does unlock new features like GPS but Ford doesn't?
