One question mark over whether the 2012 Derby will be run on a mid-week day or not would be whether it has to fit around other national festivities? By the time that decision is being made there will have been a general election but either Gordon Brown or David Cameron (sorry, but Nick Clegg really is a long shot) may wish to heed the words of one of the Queen’s trainers, Richard Hannon, who once said of his patron: “She’s a very good owner and we speak quite often. I think her trainers get through quicker than Mr Brown.” The resident of No 10 Downing Street, whoever he may be, would do well to remember that before making too many changes.
