  1. The fact they have verified that there is water ice on Mars means that if it is easy to get to and utilitze it could in theory be used to support a human presence on Mars.  Water in it's liquid state is obviously necessary to sustain human life, and the same water broken down in it's two elements hydrogen and oxygen are also valuable.

    .

Liquid hydrogen is the rocket fuel with the most bang for the buck of any chemical element that have been used for propulsion.

    .

Liquid oxygen is the oxydizer for your rocket engine and oygen as a gas can be used for breathing and the two elements can produce electricity in a fuel cell.

    .

One Mars exploration scenerio I read about would send an unmanned ship to the planet that includes a return to Earth craft unfueled as well as  a habitat module.  Once this equipment is in place, functioning properly, and water extraction is being converted for use, only then would the manned expidition with another return ship be sent to Mars.  The redundancy of two return ships in a safety factor.

    .

Mars water, if it can be easily utlilized, can be used for drinking, breathing, and power.

  2. Rocket fueol doesnt consist of oil.

The only oil derivative in any rocket fuel is binding agents in the space shuttle solid rocket boosters.

Primary rocket fuel is hydrogen and oxygen, in their liquid states which react exothermically to give water in its gaseous state thus increasing its volume and its propulsion yadda yadda yadda.

So no, unless they found heaping mounds of sulphur, only in its metallic form, not polymeric or monoclinic.

Most solid rocket fuels are nitrate or chlorate based.

Whoops, they've found both potassium and perchlorate. Two ingredients for rocket fuel.

  3. No effect whatsoever.  I don't think there will be a refueling station anytime soon.  That's not even an idea in the mind of NASA.  Gravity is the major propulsion force for spacecraft cruising around our solar system.

  4. there's no oil on mars.

    they found a little water.

and no, we're not going anywhere.
