Question:

Will the bulb life a rear projection tv be dramatically shortened if the tv were turned on and then off?

I went to turn on my Rear Projection LCD tv, to find out that my friend had just turned it on himself. Therefore, it was turned on, off, and then on again (turned it back on after I turned it off) in about 15 seconds.

My question is whether this will have any ill effects on either the bulb life or the tv in general. I know that it should not be done often; but do you think that once would be alright?

Thanks...

  1. yes,its like a light it takes a jolt of power 2 start it, spending like a minuts worth of energy each time u turn it on...slowly but it will decrease its life.

  2. The newer Mitsubishi and Toshiba DLP's have a feature where the lamp will not completly shut off for a couple of minutes to avoid just such cases.  Older DLP's and LCD rear projection sets do not.

One time will not have a great effect on it's longevity.

  3. yes the jolt of electricity makes its life shorter

  4. In general, the most wear and tear on solid state electronics occurs at power up. That is when your item is most likely to fail. RPTVs have become far more reliable than in years past. Now, when you turn it off, your RPTV goes through a cool down cycle. A fan continues running after you turn it off to cool that hot RP bulb.

Now a power outage is different. Unplugging your RPTV without having it go through the cool down; or having a power outage when your TV bulb is hot does shorten the lifespan of the bulb.
