I want to change doctors and I will need all my paperwork for the new doctor, if I find one. Legally, in South carolina, am I personally allowed " My File"?

  1. You are allowed your file anywhere.

  2. Yes, you are. Most doctors will charge you a fee to get it tho. I know it sounds ridiculous, but you actually have to pay to get your own medical records. I changed doctors and had to pay $28.00 to get my file. Like they say, nothing is free anymore :-)

  3. You are allowed to have the information in the file. As I understand, the information belongs to you but the file belongs to the hospital. You may have to settle for copies. If they don't give them to you it's a violation of HIPPA.

  4. Yes they should do if you can prove your you

    its your file

  5. You are entitled to all you records. Your new doctor can request them or you can . If you do you will most likely have to pay a fee per page.

  6. Your records belong to the doctor. You can have the records sent to your new doctor, or you can pay per page for copies to bring over yourself.

  7. You should be able to.  I am in Canada, and I know when I switched doctors my file was released to me.  I think my new doctor called my old doctor to have the file released though.

  8. Yes, you are entitled to your medical history and they should hand it over without any problem.

  9. You are allowed to take home a copy of your medical file, however, the original must stay with the practice or hospital for legal and pracical reasons.
