    The river levees at New Orleans are immensely strong and were not damaged by Katrina. Also, there are "spillways" upstream from New Orleans that can be opened to relieve the pressure on the levees ffom high water.

    New Orleans had no problems at all during the 1993 midwest flooding, which is similar to what is happening right now.
