  1. This tax( 54 cents per gallon) will expire in January 2009.

  2. domestically the sugar cane based ethanol works fine in Brazil but if we(Americans) start to import them  the brazilians

will have to increase production which means use more land for the sugar canethe food crisis will be even worse.

  3. The argument against Brazilian ethanol was that buying ethanol from Brazil would encourage them to destroy more rain forests to produce ethanol and was therefore opposed by environmental lobbies.

I'm sure the American interests were very happy to join the environmentalists on this one.

Corn soy bean farmers are getting large supplements as well as enjoying very high prices for their grains. Ethanol producers are also getting Rich on it due to the high demand and limited supply.

Calif. has mandated ethanol blends in gasoline to replace the polluting MTBE. Ethanol is also an OCTANE booster. However the thermal energy in ethanol is 34% less by volume than gasoline. These are the reasons it is used only in small ratio's with gasoline. (See the MIT reserch on what they call "The little engine that could")

Ethanol burns most efficiently at a compression ratio i the neighborhood of 14 to 1 where gasoline cannot be used. Gasoline engines have a compression ratio of about 9 to 1.

Auto manufactures claim they are working on "Flex Fuel designs" however in Brazil 50/50 ratio's with ethanol are government mandated and engines are designed accordingly.

I could go to write a thesis on this subject but i recommend you just do some reserch.

Yes, I believe the government tarrifs on Barzilian Ethanol will be lifted, do to popular demand, No matter who is elected. People now are more concerned with high energy prices than they are with the rain forests.

    Public Priorities do change.

  4. Not unless the  brazilian ethanol producers start contributing to the congressman and senators campaigns or just flat pay them off, like the corn producers in this country are now.
