  1. I mulched around mine but did not use landscape fabric.

It has spread like wildfire.  I love it!    Good luck  :)

  2. if you don't place the weed fabric real close around the base it will spread to the size of the hole you leave in the fabric the fabric is to keep stuff from growing insted of using fabric plant your myrtle let it get growing well 6 weeks or so and then use preen weed killer around it preen will not hurt plants that are growing good and won't let weeds grow  i  have rose bushes along the side of my house in pea gravel with no fabric just using the preen it works great without the time or money of using the fabric

  3. Do you want it to spread?  Or do you want to contain it?

If you want to contain it, find another plant.

If you want it to spread, I would not use the weed fabric.  As the plants grow, and new braches reach 1.5-2 feet long, stick two or three leaf nodes in the ground and they will develop new roots.  They will grow roots just on the ground, but I think they grow faster if you shove the new branches in the ground.
