  1. There is only a tiny little remote infitesimal chance that that could happen, you're more likely to get killed by lighting while fighting off a shark attack. And if it does destroy Earth, most likely it will happen so fast that you won't even notice. :)

  2. no.

and even if it would, it's not like anyone's going to be around to care much.

  3. No. Study the Bible to see how the Earth is going to be destroyed.

  4. Well, the people that are the real experts on this question are the ones who are going to flick the switch. So my guess is NO.

  5. No, it's not going to destroy Earth until they start colliding particles, which will happen about 2 months after it's turned on.  At that point, any of the following might happen:

    1) A stable micro black hole is created, eating its way to the center of the earth before devouring the entire planet.

    2) A form of strange matter that is more stable than "ordinary matter" (i.e. everything on Earth) is created and starts a chain reaction that converts the entire planet and maybe the entire solar system into strange matter.

    3) A tiny wormhole is created and a deadly self-replicating nanorobot from far away in space-time comes through it and kills us all.

    4) Something totally unpredictable and disastrous happens.  No one knows the full range of possibilities.

Of course the scientists at CERN estimate that the chances of one of those doomsday scenarios happening is on the order of 1 in 50,000,000 (better than winning the Powerball jackpot at least), but those odds really have no meaning because like I said before, nobody knows what could happen.  People can theorize all day what kinds of particles are going to come out of this thing, but the truth is that nobody knows for sure what will be created and what it will do.  If people knew what was going to happen, why would they spend $10 billion to build the thing?

In short, it's possible that the earth will be destroyed, but I wouldn't bet on it, because a) it's a long shot, and b) if you win, how are you going to collect?
