Question:

Will the medication Provera, not the birth control, stop me from getting pregnant?

I'm about 11 days late on my period, and i'm pretty regular. I went off birth control about 3 months ago without any problems, and had regular periods. So now, my doctor wants to proscribe Provera, not depo-Provera the birth control!!! This medication is to help start my period. I've taken nurmerious HPT and only one showed a faint positive! I'm now thinking it was just an evap line, considering i havn't gotten a positive since. I'm also doing a blood test on thursday before my OBGYN proscribes the Provera.

I'm not getting my hopes up about being pregnant. As i havn't had any real symtoms other then increased CM and a few dizzy spells.

So in preperation of not being pregnant and my Dr giving me the Provera, I'm wondering if this medication will stop me from getting pregnant? When TTC, every month is a chance and i'm not willing to risk that. Iv'e read the online drug info on Provera but want to know if anyone has an personal experience with it. Anyone have any thoughts from personal experience?

Thanks to all my lovely ladies here on answers TTC !!!!

  1. I have used Provera twice, since I wasn't getting my period after going off birth control.  Provera will not affect you if you are already pregnant.  They used to use it to test for pregnancy, and if you had a withdrawal bleed, you were not pregnant, and if you didn't bleed, then you were pregnant.  It doesn't do too much to raise the risk of birth defects, so I wouldn't worry, and it sounds like your doc is being very thorough about it, so that's great! Goodluck and I hope you get a BFP and don't have to take it.

  2. I too have taken Provera to bring on a late period. My dr did the same thing yours is telling you to do. We did a blood test nothing, so we went ahead with the provera and it worked like a charm brought that period right to the surface!  I have since only used it that one time and i also got pregnant some time later! I am now 29 weeks pregnant so it is a normal situation and it wont prevent you from getting pregnant. Sometimes after we go off birth control our body stalls and we need to help it along as my dr explained it so dont worry....get that blood test and then wait and see what the Lord brings....good luck to you and yours

  3. Provera will not stop you from getting pregnant. If you are concerned about the potential health concerns for a fetus, try asking for Prometrium instead. It is made from progesterone instead of the progestins in Provera. The only real difference is that progesterones (Prometrium) is bio-identical to what would naturally be in your body whereas progestins (Provera) are not. Prometrium is also regularly prescribed to pregnant women. As a side note, I personally had fewer side effects with Prometrium. I hope that helps and good luck trying to conceive.

  4. I was also given provera to start a period as i also didnt get a period for a while and also all the HPT that i had taken where neg, i felt the same way as you and i asked my doctor all the questions you asking, so when you go to do the blood test and see your doctor maybe you should ask him. . .

Actually i really hope that you are pregnant and dont need to bother about the Provera

Good Luck and keep me posted, im praying for you
