  1. HI Katie to start a ant farm you need a mated queen ant.  She will lay eggs and these will hatch into the workers.  She will supply all the worker ants that will build you ant farm if you supply them with food, usually sugar.  So the 'menssor barbarus queen' will be the starter ant of your colony.  Your ants from the garden will sad to say try to kill her as she is a different species of ant.  Also they will die as they do not have a nest to go back to.  Although they are all female they are sterile and will not lay eggs only the queen can do that.  So you need to clear out all the ants you have introduced to your farm and start again with just the queen.

  2. You made a serious mistake, Katie.  You need to maintain that little ant farm with ONLY the species in that farm.  You need to understand, there is NO such thing as an average ant.  Each and every species is different.  Not only that, but by introducing wild ants you take a chance introducing disease.  More than likely you will have to try to get rid of all the exotic ants you introduced and replace them with ant farm ants.

Ants are not breeds.  Ants are species.  Dogs and cats are breeds.  Breeds can mate and produce viable young.  Species cant.

  3. Absolutely NOT.  Worker ants from a different species than the queen, WILL kill her.  You cannot intermix species of ants,  termites, bees, wasps, or etc.  They do not get along and are not compatible.  These insects would consider the intervention by members of another species as a "threat" to their colony.
