The recent financial revolution at Paris-Saint Germain has sent shockwaves all across the Ligue1 and to finish second in the Championnat will indeed be tantamount to winning one
The vulnerability of the French outfit, which stood champions of the biggest prize in French football this campaign, Montpellier Herault Sport Club, could be seen from the seemingly annoyed words uttered by its president, Louis Nicollin, "I hope Paris succeed
us as the French champions", admitting the pressure his side is subjected to defend the prized crown.
And while the recent mega rich signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva have generated shockwaves across Europe, the very frank Louis Nicollin, had all the words to praise for his side which spent only 2 million pounds in the transfer market last
summer, yet were able to become French Champions and that too for the first time in their history.
To him, the PSG signing of Ibrahimovic was of not much importance as the world’s fastest footballer on earth is the one according to him as not impressive at all. "He has never impressed me much’’, were the words of Loulou.
The candid president, also took a dig at Marseille, the long time rivals of Paris Saint Germain, to be affected more by the economic boom at Parc des Princes, than his Montpellier side and according to him, "it would really annoy Marseille and I would love
that."
Furthermore, the recent signings by the Montpellier based club have shown tremendous promise as the newly signed, highly talented winger from Nice , Anthony Mounier, has already netted four goals. The 24-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the
club and did not take long to get going.
The newly-bought duo of strikers, Emanuel Herrera and Gaetan Charbonnier, have shown promise too as both of the latest signings have a goal to their names. The young lads together with the experienced hitman, Souleymane Camara, augers well for the side’s
offensive unit.
The confident feeling amongst the players could be seen from the two friendlies played recently, with the Stade de la Mosson side dominating the two with heavy margins. First win came with a 5-0 thumping of Lazore FC while the other came in a 3-1 thrashing
of the Ligue 2 outfit Arles-Avignon.
The cheap but promising signings have come as a result of the recent departure of Olivier Giroud, their highest goal scorer of the winning campaign, to Arsenal. The new faces in the squad are young and energetic and show great zeal, but of course cannot
be compared to the might of Ibrahimovic and company in terms of the star power.
With the future of the club on a high in terms of them being able to pip their big spending rivals PSG to the title race, it now remains to be seen if the new recruits at the club will be able to carry on with the impact Olivier Giroud has had at the club.
Also, another aspect that that will have to be noticed is whether the young strikers of the club be able to match with the money spree incurred in the French League in recent years and will they be able to compete on the highest level or not. Money has just
gripped the game and only time will tell if trophies could still be secured without much resources.
