  1. Very, thats why there has been so much hype on letting the ozone repair, they dont really care about the ozone cuz all it does it cause a hole the fries australia, but all of a sudden they are preping for something? Yea good chance the earth will be fried by the most powerfull solar winds seen yet

  2. No more than the last one, or the millions of solar max's before that. In fact, so far this solar cycle is off to a really slow start. I've never seen the Sun so boring.

  3. Solar max has been around longer than humans.

this is a period of the solar cycle where activity is the highest,

and occurs approximately every 11 years.

here on planet Earth,we are protected by the atmosphere, and more notably the magnetosphere.

  4. Many forecasters believe Solar Cycle 24 will be big and intense. Peaking in 2011 or 2012, the cycle to come could have significant impacts on telecommunications, air traffic, power grids and GPS systems. (And don't forget the Northern Lights!) In this age of satellites and cell phones, the next solar cycle could make itself felt as never before.

The furious storms won't start right away, however. Solar cycles usually take a few years to build to a frenzy and Cycle 24 will be no exception. "We still have some quiet times ahead," says Hathaway.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on a promising little active region. Will it become the first sunspot of a new solar cycle? Stay tuned for updates from Science@NASA.

  5. If the next solar max is big, as some have predicted, it could send CME events our way, which could disrupt orbiting satellites, and even mess with electronics on the ground.  Fortunately, these events can be predicted a day or so in advance, so satellite operators can take precautions, and we on the ground can unplug our expensive toys.  But all we might get are pretty auroras.

I'm looking forward to seeing some sunspots on the Sun again.  My white light filter for my scope is showing me a featureless round disk.  It's hard to tell if i'm even in focus.

  6. Not particularly.

Now remember not to go listening to any Mayan and/or 2012 rubbish.
