i did a tune up on my 97 dodge intrepid at the begining of the summer and a week after i did that i just went over a hmp in the road and (it didn't bottom out ) it just quit working and it stalled on me, i couldn't get it to start back up till the next morning i jumped it to get it running and i tried to drive it a mile to get it back home as soon as i gave it gas i had no power at all and about 100yds later it just quit it had no charge .

The alter nator is good the battery is good and i am out of options with this car . people have told me that the oil pump in thosse cars are known to go out in them, so i thought maybe that would be wrong with it but i don't know .

If anyone has an idea of what is wrong or knows what is wrong with it please let me know .

THANK YOU

  1. Oil pump is made of two gears it will not give knocking noise,if it is from oil pump engine can stuck up it wont move,if engine starts  but no responce when you paddle then you may have faulty or  not connected properly air sensor,if not starting with engine cranking check fuel pump

  2. even if the oil pump went out, thats no reason for it to stall like that..

    Check your head gaskets.

  3. You state you had to jump the engine to get it going.

You state you drove 100 yards, it stopped, and you had NO CHARGE.

But then you state the battery and alternator are good!

This doesn't gel. I'd think if you jump start and drive off, and the battery was flat and is NOT charging, 100 yards probably as far as you WOULD go. Check the alternator, and alternator wiring, again.

The loud knocking? It seems disconnected from the above. Did the engine have sufficient oil? Was there any low pressure indication? Please read other answers re timing etc. If an engine runs without oil, or out of timing, it knocks alright!

  4. The oil pump is a gear pump and will not "knock", your problem is more serious. If it is a 2.7 litre v-6 this engine is notorious for the timing chains jumping. The timing chain tensioner is oil fed and uses oil pressure to keep tension on the chain and when this oil pressure drops off the chain gets slack and jumps. This results in valve timing getting out of sync and the engine will go to a no start situation . the end result is pistons hitting and bending valves, went through this with my sons Intrepid resulting in changing out the engine. Have compression test done that will tell you of valve train damage because valves will be open when not supposed to be resulting in "0" compression in a number of cylinders.. Good Luck
