Question:

Will the passport office deny a picture with a smile?

This is my first time getting a passport, and I had my picture taken at a place that offered passport pictures a couple of days ago in preparation of my appointment. I did a little smile - not a huge one or anything - but it was still a smile. I had read the info provided in the passport application regarding pictures, and it didn't say anything about not smiling, but I randomly came across something today that said smiles aren't allowed on passport photos...so I'm both concerned about my passport eligibility and upset that the passport photo people didn't tell me not to smile if it wasn't going to be allowed before I shelled out $12 to them for a 2x2 picture. My appointment for getting the passport done is this Saturday, and so if I need to get another one done, I'll have to do it tomorrow...so my question is:

Will the passport office actually deny a passport photo that has me smiling, even though the application paperwork doesn't say not to? Or do you think they'll let it slide?

  1. i think that is actually intended to keep people from making big giant ridiculous grins.  a little normal smile shouldn't be a problem.

  2. It should be okay. I'm smiling in my passport picture. (not a big smile but I am smiling) :)

  3. Yes, it happend to me this year. For some securtity reason, they will not allow you to have any expression

  4. The guy at the office where I got mine wouldn't take the picture UNTIL i smiled (in good fun). Now I have a goofy looking picture on my passport.

I think Americans are the only ones who do it!

(I'm pretty certain they cannot regulate your facial expression, that sounds pretty rediculous to me)

  5. Regardless of whether or not they want you to smile,  it's best that you don't.

Some places don't mind it, others won't let you proceed because of it, so instead, just keep a straight face so don't have to worry about where you can and  cannot go.
