  1. Laws of probability eventually check up.

  2. Since it has happened before (late October 1991), it could very well happen again.  There is no way of knowing well in advance, but it is likely to happen again sometime in the future.

  3. Of course it can. Murphy's law seeks to that. But to understand what the 'perfect storm' was: A large tropical low of hurricane force moved north along the US east coast. Meanwhile a large polar cold front came in from the west. When they met, it created a situation where extremely warm and moist air was under extremely dry and cold air. That fuelled the low into an intensity seldom seen. But the mechanical principle behind it is pretty much the same for any convective low: A place where air rises rapidely, creating a zone of lower pressure that must fill with surrounding air thus creating hurricane force winds.

If you have seen the movie, I have to tell you that it has somethng that irritates me terribly.

The yacht Mistral was caught in the storm. Two passengers sent a distress signal against the advice of the Ship Master. They were rescued by the US Coast Guards but in the process one helicotper was lost with its crew. Yet, the day after, the Mistral was found still floating. The movie glorifies the action of the two female passengers. This is wrong. The Master's decision to ride the storm at high sea was the correct one and - according to the international maritime law - these women had no right to send a distress message. They are, in fact, indirectly responsible for the death of the brave US Coast Guard airmen.

Maritime training is my profession and I have this information from a Coast Guard friend stationned at Puerto Rico.
