Will the police shoot me, if they knock on my door and I am afraid and answer with a gun in my hand?

With the new gun law, I wondered how long before such a thing would happen. Well, it happened in Los Angeles today. A man was killed, and his grieving daughter said, "He was a good man. He would never hurt anyone. He was just afraid."

How would I know if it really was the police? If I am a woman alone and afraid, I probably would not leave the gun in the bedroom. What would you do?

I'm waiting for the facts in the case to come out.

If he had the gun in his hand, and started to raise it, then I think the police were justified to fire in self defense.

As for what I'd do... I'd check the peephole, and if I still wasn't sure I'd call 911.

They have to tell you to drop it first. Unless you happen to be pointing it at them!

I'd take it with me, but I wouldn't point it at them.

If a cop ever shoots at me with out a warning, and he misses, that cop will become a dead cop a second later.

Your description says "knock on the door" you don't say pound on the door with great force, so I am assuming you mean to say they are there to get information and they aren't acting in a menacing way.  Take the gun with you to the door, if that is what you always do, keep it hidden from view.  If they have a warrent tell them you are holding a gun and that you aer going to put it on the ground and do so quickly.  Explain to them that you are only protecting yourself in your home and taht you often feel less than safe when people come to your door and puond on it and that until you opened the door you  couldn't confirn they were policepeople.

I would open the door just a crack. I would hold the gun on the other side of the door. I would ask them what they want, do business, and shut the door in their face. They can get a warrant if they want any more than that.

More than likely they would it's proven over and over, but I think we are going to see a few cops killed too sooner or later, with these new "no knock warrants" where they just bust in, eventually there's gonna be someone with their gun handy and respond to his/her door being bashed open in the middle of the night.

Anyone who busts in like that really deserves it though, the person has no time to figure out if their cops or not, if they stop and try to, they may be the victim,  there's no reason not to wait it out, other than huge egos.....

And then consider the increasing number of wrong houses they break into, time is stalking them, it simply can't be stopped.....

You're d**n right they will shoot you if you have a gun in your hand.  If the police come to your door,  open it and cooperate.  Nothing else.

well for it to be a good shoot the person has to be raising the gun in their direction. they can point their guns at you and shout at you to drop it but once the guy starts to move the gun in their direction they can shoot
