Will the smoking ban include rail station platforms?

Question

Personally, I cannot wait for the smoking ban to come into effect, 1 July 2007. Although the platforms are technically "outdoors" the populace seems to use the platforms like ciggy sanctuaries, lighting up the minute they step off a train, or smoking like chimneys whilst waiting for a train. Still a platform is surely a public area, so will smoking on them be a thing of the past?

i agree with you on this question my city is trying for a ban too.the passed the beer on sundays thing and they were upset that it didnt pass before(like you cant buy the beer on saturday evening?)but i cant stand it do be driving and the car in front is blowing all there smoke into my car yuck  i think they should put all smokers in jail for putting non smokers lifes at risk

I think it will depend. If the station is totally outside, then no as the ban only applies to 'indoor public places' Smoking is already banned on stations which are entirely, or  partly, underground, including main line stations like Liverpool Street, London and Birmingham New Street. This ban followed the King's Cross Underground fire as a safety, rather than health, measure.

The ban on smoking has been illegal in Scotland for almost a year now.

When the ban took effect, Network Rail took the opportunity to impose a smoking ban throughout their stations using powers under the Railway By-Laws.

I would expect them to do likewise in England & Wales

one day smoking will be a thing of the past and your taxes will go up to pay for the lost tax money.

in ohio your not allowed to smoke in bars, bowling alleys, bingo halls, racetracks, enclosed areas of restaurants and some other buildings.

trans fats are  next.

The way I understand the law NO, it will not. BUT then again I have heard of a city that has banned smoking on the sidewalk. So anything is possible. Even though I do smoke cigars I do understand the smoking ban in certain locations. Like restaurants, coffee shops, stores, etc. BUT NOT in public or in bars or in clubs.

It depends upon how the ban was written. Ohio just passed a ban, and the Cleveland public transit system announced today they are banning smoking on platforms, bus stop shelters, etc. to comply with the language of the ban. A ban in another state or country may interpret "outdoors" differently.
