Will the speed sensor cause the car to not switch gears and stop odomoter from working?

yes, if your car's computer requires it for knowing the engine speed to do shifting or computing optimum performance, then yes that is a likely scenario.

Yes.  The computer must know the car speed to properly change gears.

But there are many other reason why your gears would not shift (including broken computer).
