Question:

Will the stray cat I took in ever adjust?

I took in a cat who I believe was abandoned by her owner at a house for sale in the country. She is very sweet towards humans, but hates my old cat and dog. They are friendly yet curious towards her but she is hateful towards them. When they come near her she stiffens her whole body, growls, and swats at them. I've had her for 5 days now. Will she ever adjust to being an inside cat with other animals or is she too wild from living alone in the country?

  1. yes she will, i friend has 3 cats and they were all strays and are the cutest sweetest cat ever!

  2. She Might, How long ago did you take her in? If it was VERY Recent, You have to give her/him time.

  3. Five days isn't long enough to tell.

Keep the new cat in a separate room as much as possible.  Let her get used to the smell and sounds of the other pets gradually, in a place she feel secure.

After a cupla weeks, expose her to the old pets for just a few minutes.  Then a little longer each day.

    Sooner or later she'll adjust.

  4. Most adjust, but it depends on what really is pushing the cat's buttons to make them react aggressively.  Once the cat learns that the dog won't attack, and the other cat isn't territorial and about to fight, she'll calm down a lot.  But she may still want her personal space.

  5. She will adjust, Remember, cats live in a hierarchy so part of this is to establish position and rankings

      Thanks for saving a life
