yes the first answered was correct and so was the second answerer partially if your vehicle requires premium then that's the fuel it need or you will have pinging noise in your engine if in doubt get a pretest and you will have a better idea on the condition of your vehicle and yes the guaranteed to pass formula is available in cali.

Well the higher the octane, the better the burn. So theoretically, higher grade fuel burns better and cleaner. If you're having trouble passing inspection, visit your local auto parts store and ask for "Guarenteed to pass" it usaully comes in a blue box and you pour it in the tank a day or two before inspection, and it guarentees that you pass. I'm not sure if it's available in Cali though. Good luck.
