  2. Eventually yes.  There is only a finite amount of fossil fuels buried within the earth.  At some point humanity will tap it dry.

Hopefully by then we'll all be getting our power from something like "Mr. Fusion" in the Back to the Future movies.

  3. looks like its happening now.  US refuses to drill off-shore, in its natural parks and on the Arctic of Alaska.  We're out and we're depending on foreign oil.  We haven't looked very closely at the alternatives.  Your question stated "gas."  We have tons of natural gas we could convert to gasoline.  We have oil sands we could convert and all kinds of other alternatives.  Theoretically, we can't run out, but for sure we're out now.

  4. Not as long as we can plant beans!!

  5. Irrelevant.  We will switch to a different type of fuel as it runs out.

There are several different sources of energy that we could use to power our vehicles with.  But gasoline is the most profitable at this time.

In the future, you could see hydrogen or cellulosic ethanol powering our cars.  But not until it is more profitable than gasoline.

Cellulosic ethanol is made from waste wood products.  I see this as one of the more promising solutions.  This type of ethanol is not made from items we use for food.
