Can England bowl New Zealand out in a day, and then knock off the total?

Also if you saw todays play, what did you think of both teams performances, and what did you think of Vaughan's 100?

If you didnt see the match, then answer this q. Who's better Ian Bell or Paul Collingwood?

Thanks from the People's Champ

  1. If Sidebottom bowls like he did on Friday, then England can win. If he bowls like he did on Thursday or this evening then the match is heading for a draw.

I thought Vettori was brilliant, also Martin did very well this morning - it's thanks to him that England didn't get the runs at a tempo which would have allowed them more time to knock NZ over second time around. Vaughan played a good innings in difficult conditions with not a lot of support until Broad came in. Maybe not his best effort, but he remains a class batsman when his feet are moving properly.

Just to answer the final part; I'd take Colly over Belly if my life depended on the innings, but Belly over Colly if I wanted things to look pretty.

  2. Yes! of course! England will Win!! (yes Kook, i'm trying the Kiss-*** method of points scoring again!!, doubting that the result will be the same tho! LOL)

honestly, conditions are likely (i think) to favour the bowling of Sidebottom and Anderson and New Zealands top 4 looks to me (keep in mind, i have seen no footage of this match), to be very inexperienced and a tad frail, McCullum is in good form but i still dont think hes a Test match #5 (especially when you look at some of the other #5s around the world, Hussey, Bell/Collingwood, Prince/de Villiers, Ganguly/Laxman) and i think that if England can knock them over for around 250 by around the 65 over mark, then they could definately get the runs in time to win! Eng strong bowling vs NZs batting that lacks test experience, let alone experience under pressure, and the longer it takes me to type this, the more i believe england will win

ok i think i've talked myself into it, i they new zealands batting WILL crack and england WILL win

didnt see any of the match, but its great see vaughan back in the runs, as i have said alot on here "form is temporary, class is permanent! and Vaughan is pure class"

Bell or Collingwood? i say collingwood as i have seen him play well, not the most talented batsman, but makes alot of runs on sheer determination and guts! Bell is more talented but i have not personally seen the best of him yet and always get the feeling when watching him that the can do better then i have seen

  3. It would take a major collapse from ether team for a result to occur. its pretty unlikey unless england rip through early in the day so therefore the 1st hour or so will basiclly show us if there could be a result

    3 people impressed me today:

Vaughn: great hundred and hes back in great form

Vettori: fantastic bowling to rip though the middle order

Martin: bowled extremely well and deserved more than 2 wickets

also strauss 50 and orams handy bowling should get mention

  4. I don't think a result is forthcoming to be honest. It'll probably end in a draw, there just isn't enough time to bowl NZ out and then bat again, overhauling whatever total NZ can amass, they'd all have to bat like they were playing an ODI. For England to win NZ would have to collapse horribly during the first session tomorrow, but to be honest that doesn't look like happening. How and Redmond did a good job of batting through and surviving the last few overs tonight. And even though the NZ top order is quite inexperienced and jittery McCullum is in great form and Vettori is good and solid when it comes to upping the total. I guess it depends on Sidebottom, if he bowls like he did on Friday then anything can happen. But I'm putting my money on that draw.

I thought Vaughn played well, it was patient and workmanlike. It certainly wasn't anywhere near his best but he played exactly like he should have done to gather runs and build a decent total while the middle order was collapsing around him. I was at the game today by the way (in the mound stand, it was full of yobs, but I digress) I have a great picture of him celebrating and it was satisfying to see him get some runs after his failure in NZ, but I always err on the side of caution when it comes to form. Vaughn has an amazing record at Lord's and he has quite a few centuries there so I'm not going to make any judgments until after he plays the other two tests.

    Other performances:

Vettori bowled beautifully with amazing variation of pace and length (something Pansar needs to learn). He thoroughly deserved his wickets and was a joy to watch today, I think I love him even more than I did before! I managed to film him bowling (before the batteries in my camera died!) and he is just so graceful and elegant. Since gaining the captaincy he's become an even better player.

I also enjoyed watching Oram, he only got two wickets and conceded a few runs but he has a good solid action and he really impressed me. Plus he's very patient and doesn't let much effect him on the field, even the drunk morons in the mound stand who were abusing him (and How and Martin whenever they came our way). And he smiled for the picture I took of him (lol) which is a plus.

Cook and Strauss played well but I think Pieterson needs to work out how to play Vettori a little better because at the moment he just doesn't look as if he knows how to. He has gotten out so many times to Vettori he just looks lost whenever he comes up against him.

As to who is better out of Bell and Collingwood? I would say Colly. Bell is very talented but he just doesn't do much unless his position in the side is being questioned. He gets 50's but never pushes on unless there is a hint he may be dropped. Putting it mildly he does enough to remain in the team and nothing more (which is just lazy). Whereas Collingwood at least looks like he's trying and I always get the impression that he's playing to the best of his ability and trying his hardest for the team.

  5. I think a result is extremely unlikely. However, it is possible, given the frailties of New Zealand's batting. They were saved in the first innings by McCullum. If their second innings follows suit, but without any heroics from McCullum, then there could be a frenetic run chase for England in the final session tomorrow.

    As regards the performances today:

    Vettori: bowled excellently, and seems to be revelling in the captaincy;

Martin: didn't have much luck, but put all the England batsmen under pressure:

    England's batting: Cook and Strauss were excellent, Pietersen, Bell and Collingwood less than inspiring. Broad and Sidebottom lent fine support to Vaughan;

Vaughan: A captain's knock. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. And to think, some people have been advocating he should be dropped! (ha'hmm!). He must have been listening, and pulled out all his powers to cement his place in the side for the summer.

As for Bell or Collingwood: I am no big fan of either of them. Bell has more potential to be a good player than Collingwood, however, I would pick Collingwood in a tight situation.

  6. if they do that then i wont want 2 miss that match!!!!!

  7. Vettori 250 career wickets - yeehah! Definately NZ's day today.

Vaughan batted well and did a good job of steadying the ship after a few wickets fell before lunch.

There SHOULDN'T be a result lol, it would take a pretty disasterous day for NZ to lose from here

  8. I started to watch it KooKee, but fell asleep. Story of my life!

  9. I'm pretty sure that NZ are gonna get lucky and the match will go for a draw. Unless... England pull off something amazing...they have the talent and confidence to. I don't think NZ can win from here..i don't think they can pull of something amazing...they're quite battered and bruised.

    >>>>Paul collingwood is a better player than Ian Bell...I an Bell has grown in the last few years...he use to play stupid shots and get himself out when he was doing well. But Collingwood is the better player..not only because of his experience..but i think he's there for the team more.

  10. I'd say England are well placed to win the match, but need to be more careful in the field!

  11. no

  12. Obviously, if anyone will win this now, its England. For even that to happen though, New Zealand will have to collapse tomorrow morning, big time. But, if Sidebottom bowls like he did Friday afternoon, then it could happen. This time though, they will have to get McCullum and Vettori cheaply. The scores are about level, so if England can bowl them out by midway through the afternoon session tomorrow, then I think they can chase it down.

It's nice to see Vaughan back to something near to form with his 100, particuarly after the torrid time he had in New Zealand. I thought he played really patiently, which is often the best way to bat if you are out of form - just build your innings slowly and only play the shots you are best at to start. Then once it feels like its coming back (Your form - when your timing is good and you generally feel good while you're out there) start playing a few more shots.

And just for the record, I think in tests, Bell edges it although, like he has said himself in the last few days, it would be nice to see him convert more of his fifties to hundreds, and get some big 100's. In ODI and T20, I'd say Collingwood. I think, out the two, Paul is better at attacking quickly - better 6 hitter, although he can play conservely when he needs to (Final day, Ashes 2005, hung around for ages with KP). He is one of the best fielders in the world, and this is more important in the shorter game (Not saying that it isn't in tests!). Saying that, some of the catches Bell has taken are good too.

Overall, they are closely matched - good question.

  13. I do not think so - With a day left even if weather favors all NZ

need to do is play couple sessions. That is easy to say, when

the ball is swinging - NZ should be able to take advantage and

play on the merit of the ball.

Your Vaughn played a good innings - specially the last 50 runs

    were great.

I pick Collingwood than Bell. He is far better.

  14. I wouldn't rule it our. NZ are very brittle on the fifth day. If we get 90 overs I think there will be a result.
