Will there ever be a way to enter a cartoon through the tv?

Hey guys I know it sounds dumb, but will there ever be a scientific machine or portal or something invented in the future which allows you to step through the tv or something into a cartoon?

eg Ren & Stimpy, the simpsons lol

Anyway, first, they'd have to discover a way to rearrange all of the atoms in our body and rearrange them on a TV screen.

Or, I guess scientists could attempt at creating an alternate dimension--a cartoon TV dimension and somehow teleport people into that dimension...

Whichever one's easier...

You can do it now with virtual reality or virtual worlds.  I don't know how close that is to whatever you're thinking.
