I think most people, including the FBI, agree that he was killed when he parachuted out of the plane. After all, an 8-year-old boy found a large chunk of his ransom money along the banks of the Columbia River. It did not appear that he was an experienced paratrooper because an experienced paratrooper would not have jumped out of a plane during a rainstorm at night without a source of light. If he was an experienced jumper, he would have checked his parachutes first even if he was in a hurry to escape. He would have then realized that he had been given a dummy chute and left it in favor of one that was fully operational.

They have already found him.  The authorities know who did it.  They never had enough evidence to take it to court and win the case.
