Will they let me join the Army if I have a history of mental illness?

I was thinking about joining the Army but I have a history of mental illness and I've been hospitalized twice. I tried to get a gun license, but they wouldn't give me one.

I doubt the Army would give me a gun...

  1. I hope not

people joining the forces are apt to end up with mental illness even if they didn't have it before

are you trying to join to get a gun? why? you need to talk to your therapist/doctor about this

  2. No, you would be considered a danger to yourself and to others around you.

  3. When did they let you out of the hospital or did they?

  4. Maybe you should go for the Marine Corps

  5. They'll probably make you Secretary of Defense.

  6. YOU GET A AUTOMATIC PSYCH COM.  hISTORY OF MENTAL ILLNESS WITH HOSPITALIZATION OR WITHOUT IS AN AUTOMATIC FLAG TO DISMISS YOU FROM PHYSICAL AND SEND YOU HOME.  THEY DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR SCORE ON THE ASVAB WAS EITHER.

  7. No, they will not allow you in.  Now if you were in and developed the mental illness they would probably discharge you under medical conditions.

But, doubt any branch would accept you; because, you would be a threat to the rest of the unit and soldiers.

    Just being honest here.

    Army Retired E-8

  8. NO, im sorry you would be PDQ (permanately disqualified).

  9. I can't say for sure.  I can however tell you that my battle buddy in basic training was bipolar and on medication for it.  She didn't make it through BCT though so maybe that says something as well.

  10. no because even if you have been diagnosed and are on meds they still will not accept you. i am not for sure because i have known people that are manic depressive and bipolar that have gotten in. i think it is a more of a case to case basis sometimes.

  11. Yes you can.

They gave ame a medical waiver for what they deemed "white coat syndrome."

However, I recommend against joining.  Every little mistake you make they punish you for, and deployments DO exacerbate metal illness.
