  1. Its like the same with VCR's

    everyone has dvds now..

  2. Blu-ray is a format to record a lot more data on a DVD like disk. They have to be played in a Blu-ray player. Just looking at the disk you can not tell the difference between a SD DVD and a Blu-ray DVD.

I'm sure the goal of the Blu-ray manufacturers is to replace DVDs completely but if it happens at all it will be many years in the future. Most likely something better will come along.

Pioneer announced today they have a Blu-ray like disk that can hold 400GB. That equals 8 Blu-ray disks or 45 SD disks. There is also a competing format going to be coming out of China next year. I don't know how much that will hold.

The first CDs held 740MB and quickly matured into 4.4 and then 8.8GB If the same holds true for blue laser technology I would expect to see 1TB players before too long. In short Blu-ray is not the end all and be all for for digital disks.

The other factor involved is that SD DVDs don't look that bad. For Blu-ray to completely take over the price would have to be competitive with present DVDs. I don't see that happening any time soon.

  3. Blu-Rays and HD DVD's are both next generation disks. They're really just fancy dvd's that won't play on a dvd player. Blu-Ray and HD DVD's are competing each other to replace regular dvd's. (They're higher quality and hold more.) Eventually society will probably switch to one or the other, but I'm not getting rid of my regular dvd's any time soon. To play a Blu-Ray disc, you need a Blu-Ray dvd player. Usually pretty expensive to come by.

(I know my explanation's not really technical, but I don't know the really technical stuff. sorry!)

  4. Blu-Ray is a DVD player and yes they intend to replace original DVD players w/Blue-Ray b/c its a lot better.

  5. a blu ray is the new higher def dvd ,like the dvd was to vhs ,the cheapest blu ray players are playstation 3's

  6. Basically the goal is for blu-ray to eventually replace dvd's but it will take a long time for that to happen....it's the same when dvd's first came out, it took over a decade for dvd's to phase out VHS tapes.

  7. Yes. and I think CD's are going to be obsolete pretty soon too because more and more people are downloading their music.

  8. Blu-Ray is the up-and-coming digital media format. It's high-def and holds a lot more than a DVD. They're slowly integrating them with DVDs, and then eventually there will be nothing but Blu-Ray (just like when DVDs first came out and took over VHS).

You need a Blu-Ray player, which is available pretty much at any big store, such as Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, etc.

Right now, Blu-Ray players are very expensive, and right now they aren't too necessary if you have an On-Demand TV service, or you can use iTunes and an AppleTV.
