Car hits Md. street-race crowd; 8 killed By STEPHEN MANNING, Associated Press Writer

1 hour, 15 minutes ago

ACCOKEEK, Md. - A car plowed into a group of street-racing fans obscured by a cloud of tire smoke on a highway Saturday, killing eight people and scattering bodies in the early morning darkness.

At least six others were injured in the gruesome wreck along a flat, isolated stretch of highway about 20 miles south of Washington known for illegal races.

Witnesses said about 50 people were gathered before dawn along Route 210 as two car spun their wheels, kicked up smoke and sped off, said Prince George's County police Cpl. Clinton Copeland.

Fans had spilled onto the smoky, dark roadway to watch the cars drive away when a white Ford Crown Victoria unexpectedly came up from behind and smashed into them.

"There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27, of Indian Head, whose father was killed.

  1. I feel like I am reading something from the 1950's!!

Come on People...ages 20 to 60??  If people died over an illegal street race and others were nearby to watch...oh well!

These people are of consenting ages and "should know better".  Each one of them knew the rish involved.  And if no one ever said anything to this area before...with all the governmental and community groups in the area...if you don't like something...CHANGE IT!  Build your own racetrack or contract on with one for weekend amateur racing...DUH!!

I cannot believe I just spent the few minutes answering such a STUPID and unfortunate incident.  How Dumb...

    No Sympathy!

  2. Unfortunately No .

the feel of power and control drives people crazy and they seek more thrill sooner or later this may come to an end when we are all flying through the air but then they will still want to be ahead of the other guy

  3. Do your "questions" always need to be so long, tell a story, & barely be a question?

    Sorry, but it gets annoying.

  4. Sounds like that White Crown Vic was a police car waiting to bust someone.

  6. This case was a bit different than most street racing incidents. The race was not the direct cause of the accident, neither car involved in the race lost control or hit anything. The people watching the race, rather than staying off the road, went out onto the highway as the cars started off, and were hit by a car doing nothing wrong. At 3-4 am you do not expect to find a crowd of folks in the middle of the road!

This will not stop the street races. They may quit racing on 210 for a while, but they will still be racing somewhere. Either they will go down to Aquasco, or over to MLK near Rt 50 or they will find another straight spot in the road!

There are two drag strips in the area, Capitol Raceway in Crofton, and Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, but they only have a few open race days a year. They also charge to race or watch, so that is not going to stop the street racing.

    You can't fix Stupid!

  7. I don't think so, although I don't race I believe that if someone has it in them to do so you can't "stop" them but if there was a place that they could do it (like a raceway) it may keep them in a more controlled enviornment

so the question you should ask is can we get a place setup for these nuts so they won't have to race on our city streets

  8. they won't learn
