  1. They will love dollars.

  2. If you don't know the exchange rate then I would get peso's. They will rip you off any way they can. So if you don't know how much change your supposed to get back if you give them a twenty you probably won't get any...

But they will definitely take US money.

  3. They'll take all the dollars you can hand them. In fact, if you use dollars they will figure out how many to take. There is the price for those with pesos who know the prices and another for those with plenty of dollars. Learn the conversion before you go. About 10 pesos per dollar or one peso equals a dime. For the real bargains look for the small shops where the locals buy their shoes, boots, clothes etc. Go right in and look at the price tags. You might not need to haggle there. The price will be right. Ask your guide, taxi driver to take you to the best places where the locals shop. I did this twice and it was nice to shop with the locals and see the difference in that and the tourist district. Be aware that Mexico is on a different schedule than America or it was when I went there. Things don't really open until noon or so and stay open much later. I hired a guide in Juarez and told him we wanted to start with a nice lunch. He took us to a fine restaurant and went in the back door and they opened early just for us. It was great (20 years ago).

In Mexico where the tourists shop for things haggle. Offer 2 if they want 10. Don't be afraid to drive a tough bargain. Chances are when you get your best deal you could buy it for less on the American side.

Restaurants and bars are different, Just pay the price and be happy.

  4. It seems to depend on what kind of store you're dealing with.  If it's on the tourist circuit, they will accept dollars and usually (except right at the border) give you change in pesos.  But if it's a mom and pop kind of place or a little store, you'll need pesos.  Places that accept them set their own rate of exchange, so it's not always the best rate, but bargaining can be done, especially at the markets.

  5. No one in the world is going to refuse american dollars.

In mexico u can use them anywhere, in tourist zones or non tourist zones, they are just as legal as the peso.
