Will this amp be too much for these subs?

I have a Hifonics 1606 D Amp and was thinking of hooking it up to 2 Alpine 12" Type-R subs rated at 500 W RMS @ 2-ohms

My amp is rated at 550 W RMS @ 2-Ohms....

Would this pose a problem?

  1. that sounds really good and it's an improvement from what you already have

this won't pose a problem undepowering a subwoofer cannot damage it

plus you're more than 70% past the rms which is good

  2. It should be fine. In my experience having an amp more powerful than the speakers usually ends up giving you the best quality. Just tune it down some.

  3. you will be fine, but make sure you have dual box because it sounds alot better in one of those

  4. the guy that said you cant damage a speaker by underpowering it doesn't know what he's talking about thats how most speakers are damaged and if your subs are dual 4 ohm subs which they probably are you would wire them down two a one ohm load to your amp and that amp is one ohm stable at 1600 watts i have two type r 10's wired to one ohm on a mtx ta81001 that is rated at 1500 watts at one ohm and they sound very good just dont use your gain as a volume k**b and keep your bass boost off or very low because the bass boost causes distortion and thats what kills subs and to the guy that says underpowering subs cant hurt more subs are killed by underpowering then overpowering because dumbass people use the bass boost all the way up and the gain all the way up when they dont have enough power from their amps and that causes distortion set your gain to your deck signal and leave it

  5. Actually, no, you will be severely under-powering the subs. If you have 2 subs rated at 500w rms each, you will need an amp that is rated for 1000w rms @ 2ohms.

These are dual voice coil subs, so you are going to want to buy the dual 2ohm model subs and wire them up to a final mono impedence of 2 ohms. So you need to wire them exactly like this:

If I were you, I would get a better amp. You arent going to see the performance from 2 woofers form this amp. I would look at the Alpine Pdx 1000.1. This is stable for 1000w rms at 2ohms. If you want to stick with the hifonics amp, go with a single sub, dual 4 ohm voice coil for a final load of 2 ohms. Good luck.
