I am custom making a comp from NewEgg and I wanted to see if this would be able to handle Crysis...decently. I plan on putting XP on it, or should I put Vista on it?

  1. i cant believe i have:

intel pentium original on 2,4 Ghz, single core

    motherboard is intel d865glc

VGA is agp asus ah3650 silent hdmi

    sound card is audigy 4

and i can run crysis on medium settings i can play just normaly, fps is from 15 to 30, thats amazing isnt?

  2. That rig will default at medium settings for Crysis. I ran an XFX overclocked 8800GTS that I overclocked even higher and it defaulted at medium in Crysis running Vista. I then went in and tweaked it. There are 12 graphics setting in Crysis (with Vista--dont know bout XP) that you can bump some up to high while leaving others at med. Vista also has very high settings. No extreme gamers I know run XP. Vista and DX10 is where its at in gaming. I have an XP gaming rig also but it collects dust while I play Crysis, COD 4. Lost Planet, Bioshock, Halo 2 etc in DX10 on my Vista gamer. Whatever OS you use DON'T put the Crysis 1.1 patch in--its got bugs. Just go with the 1.2 patch.

Althou others have mentioned the ATI cards I guess your questions wasnt about what card to buy. I will say that I yanked my 8800GTS and am now running 2 4870s in CF on an Asus X48 board and play Crysis at very high with no lag whatsoever. A note about frame rates. Crysis is the most cpu intensive game I've ever played. Your frame rates will go up 50% of what you bump your cpu up so, if you overclock the cpu 20% your frame rates go up 10%. A lot of people don't realize that and buy a faster video card when the bottleneck in Crysis was actually with their cpu and a faster cpu would have been a better thing to do.

With that cooler and some Arctic Silver 5 you can easily get that cpu up over 3 GHz. I run my E8500 at 3.8 24/7 (9.5X400--1600FSB) and clock it over 4 while benchmarking--on exotic air.

Thats a nice rig that should have Vista on it. Vista has come a long way especially with Service Pack 1 out. Anyone who says you want XP on a gaming rig doesn't hang with the gaming crowd i do, thats for sure.

  3. Yeah looks like a really good gaming rig. I still use XP. I could be wrong but I think the 32bit version of xp can only utilise about 3GB of ram - see this site: http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.htm...

Maybe go 64bit XP or vista? Personally I'd stick with what I know works and that's XP.

  4. You could probably play on medium.

I agree for Crysis you'll want a more powerful video card. Get beyond the $125 range of cards like the 8800GT and get yourself a Radeon 4850 for $175 or check out the 9800GTX+

That's the biggest boost an extra $50 can give you (way better than upgrading your CPU to an E8400)

XP will perform slightly faster, but you can only get DX10 eye candy in Vista.  Of course if you've gotta turn it off, what's the point? Some of that stuff will only be practical on the highest-end SLI systems anyway, so that's a point in favor of XP. But.. if you're playing lots of other DX10 titles besides Crysis, Vista is the way to go.

  5. Hey, If you can afford it, get a ATI hd4870 or 4870x2.  Here is my reasoning, check out the Crysis benchmarks for it.

VISTA 64BIT SP1 IS VERY STABLE
