Will this be the LAST great South African team as they need to select half black & half white from next year ?

So with this ridiculous "qouta system" from next year a 50:50 mix is required ! Never heard of that anywhere else ! I know they had the apartheid, but surely this will decimate their effectiveness. Most blacks in SA play soccer (football) not Rugby, will the same rules apply in all sports ? It's political correctness gone mad again !

I'm a South African and fear that this might very well be the end of a great rugby nation. Many of the current SA team have already signed contracts to play their rugby in Europe from next year. Our government are also considering putting through a piece of legislation which states that south Africans playing for clubs abroad will not be in the running for a spot in the SA national team.

The quota system affects all sport(rugby, cricket, athletics) except our soccer team, which incidentally only has 2 white players. Our poor government has proved to the world that in an attempt to rectify the wrongs of apartheid, they have become similar to that exact government by implementing quota systems in sport, Affirmative action policies in the work place and Black Economic Empowerment in general business.

Merritt in this country gets you nowhere!

Absolutely right, all of you.  The majority of blacks in South Africa play soccer, it will be interesting to see if they are forced to bring more whites into their game...somehow I doubt it.  This is blatant reverse discrimination, which makes the blacks' struggle for equality in South Africa a farce.

Wayne A, as a South African, this hurts badly in a way. The selection of any team must be on merit and merit only and not because a silly brainless official has a vision in mind to enforce a quota system. There are so many players of color coming through and you can see this already in the current team. Forcing the issue will see a great team being worse than even the USA. The same happens in other sports except for soccer. Now you can judge for yourself.

A bit insane, I think some country's governments need to keep off the fields and in their offices its just stupid, what if you missed out of the squad because you were the 16th choice of oyur race but clearly of much better quality than that of the other race.

we have something similar in ireland with the players from the north

instead of our national anthem we have the embarrassing  irelands call

and an unofficial quota on the number of northern players with a clear bias against limerick players

keep politics out of sport and let the best players play

Indeed, it's racism gone mad! Fact of the matter is, if there is a black player who's good enough to get into the Springboks team, he'll be there.

Can you imagine if the All Blacks were forced to pick 50% Maori/Islanders and 50% White? They don't care about that. The ABs pick the best players, regardless of their race.

If SA want to be completely anti-apartheid, they should let the Springboks pick whoever they want to be in the squad, regardless of colour.
