I've had this move played on me and I'm unsure if it is a legal move. I've search UDE and even sent them an e-mail but they have yet to reply.

The combo of "self-destruct button" with "poison of the old man"

Self-destruct states that once you are 7000 life points below your opponent you can active this card and both players life point go to 0. Going by it's life gaining effect Poison of the old man states that you gain 1200 LP.

Now this is where i get confused, going down the chain if Poison of the old is played and Self-destruct is chained to it, does both players lose or does the chain finish starting with Self-destruct button and ending with Poison of the old man and grant the player the 1200LP at the end of the chain and let him/her win the game?

Player A: 8000LP

Player B: 500LP

actives poison of the old man (gain 1200LP)

Player A:8000LP

doesn't chain

Player B: 500

Chains Self-destruct button

Player A: 0LP

Player B: 1200LP or 0LP

  1. no when both player's life point drop to 0, you can't continue and play poison of the old man. when its zero, duels over. can't continue playing if life points are 0!

  2. You can't chain Self-Destruct Button. It isn't a Quick Play Spell. You can chain Poison of the Old Man to Self-Destruct Button though. However, both players LP becomes 0 so you both still lose the game, as Poison of The Old Man will resolve before Self-Destruct Button.

  3. I'm not really sure, but I think that isn't right. A good trick for  self-destruct button is gift cards.

  4. You cannot work that combo either way. If you chain PotOM to S-DB, you will first raise your life points then drop them down to 0. If you chain S-DB to PotOM, first the S-DB will drop your LP to 0 AND THAT'S IT! THE GAME ENDS! THERE IS NO ACTIVATION OF THE OTHER CARD! The Poison of the Old Man NEVER activates.

Also, you CAN chain them either way. Here are the Spell Speed Levels:

Spell Speed 1 (like Sorcery timing from Magic: The Gathering) : Many monster effects, many Spells

Spell Speed 2 (Instant timing in MTG) : Quick-Play Spells, Multi-Trigger monster effects, Normal and Continuous Traps.

Spell Speed 3 (like the old MTG rules on Interrupt timing) : Counter Traps

I have dealt with similar situations: I had an Exodia deck long ago.

  5. Sorry, but you are forgetting one very important fact, win conditions are checked at the end of every chain LINK. In other words, once both player's lp are reduced to zero the duel ends. Poison of the Old Man would never even get the chance to resolve. The duel ends in a tie.

  6. no when both player's life point drop to 0, u can't continue and play poison of the old man. when its zero, duels over. can't continue playing if life points r 0!

  7. well he has to ues "old man posien" 1st then the self destrokt butten in that order other wies you'll both loose as far as the combo being able to work yah it would it's leagel, thair's only 2 ways to counter that;

1 negate posien of the old man so the duel ends in a draw

2 use a trap or quick-play spell (gift of the mystecal elf, emergency proviters etc) to gain LP as well as a chain from POTOM (posin - old man spell) so you both have LP n the duel continues on!! :D V!

    but yah it's leagel!
