Will this help to stop allergies

my dad is allergic to cats and he gets flu like symptoms when he is around them. I finally might be able to get a cat if i can prove that my dad won have an allergic reaction.

i have decided to keep the cat in one room. This is the downstairs room which barely ever gets used. Now before i go on i have to say that the room is very big and is about 17 meters long and 8 meter's wide so there is plenty of room for a cat to live in. I have bought everything a cat would need adn picked out a breed that doesnt shed. The cat will not come in contact with my dad and i have even bought an air purifier to get rid of most of the airbourn alergen. I will vacuum once a week and it will be followed up with regular grooming for the cat.

is there anything else that i should do to make sure my dad doesnt have an allergic reaction because i would hate to have to get rid of my cat a few weeks later because of it.

  1. Well, keeping the cat in one room is a good idea so is getting one that doesn't shed.  I would see if there is any creams or sprays that your dad could take (it may be he's allergic to a certain aspect of the cat, and not just fur) that would stop the reactions.

    Good Luck!

  2. Are you going to be in the room with this cat?? You will not have a very social cat if its cooped up in one room, even if its large....It seems to me that you wouldn't really be able to enjoy this pet as much as you should being that you would have to constantly be working to keep it and its dander away from your father......I know it would be disappointing not to get a cat right now, but it doesn't seem like it would work out to the best for you or the cat....perhaps you can wait until you move out on your own and then get a cat....Its not the hair itself thats the problem, its the dander and if dad is as allergic as you say, he will still be exposed, even with all your work...sorry.

  3. Look

    You do not know how the cat will react to living in a room not really used. cats are social animals and he may cry all night being locked up;

    If you insist on getting a cat, how about rescuing a stray older cat from a shelter.

    Ask your dad if he will take benydril.

  4. I don't know how bad your dads allergies are, or how sensitive he is. So this is a tough one. for my family bathing, brushing, and good diet have been enough to keep the allergies down, even with the cat running the house. I do know others though that cannot even come near a cat owner with out symptoms bothering them. You may just have to wait until you get out on your own to have a feline companion. Sorry

  5. All cats shed, except for the hairless ones.  Even if you keep the cat isolated, the cat's hair will end up on you and you'll bring the hair into the rest of the house.  Same goes for if the cat licks you and you touch something and spread the saliva.  I suggest either getting a hairless cat or a hypoallergenic dog.
