Question:

Will this hurt my chances of getting into the college I want?

I speak English as my native language and Swedish as a second language, and I'm taking Spanish in school. However, my school only offers Spanish 1 and French one; there are no levels above that. Will speaking Swedish make up for the lack of foreign language credits, or should I just explain the situation?

  1. It shouldn't affect your getting into a school, as long as your grades match what the school you're looking at accepts. However, you're almost definitely going to have to complete a year or two of extra foreign language once you get to college.

  2. Well if you're FLUENT in Swedish, you should be fine. I must say I'm surprised at how lacking your school is in foreign language classes. The vast majority of colleges and universities require 2 years of the SAME foreign language.

But if you're fluent in Swedish, you can do a "credit by examination"...basically if you pass the test they will consider that the equivalent of the 2 year foreign language requirement. And make sure to let the colleges know the reason you didn't take 2 years of a language at your school (that they didn't offer it, so you had no choice).

You should be just fine if you do that! =)

  3. just explain the situation

they are looking for courses and grades; the Swedish doesn't qualify.

  4. Depends on the college. Most want a GPA and SAT and don't care what you electives are.
