  1. Adding sea salt to your water and food satisfies thirst longer because the mineral content holds more of the water you drink within your body....table salt isn't great.... and tons of satly water isn't either...

  2. It actually helps runners keep from having an over-hydration problem called hyponatremia.  This condition happens when a runner drinks too much water without replacing the salt in his/her body.

    It's all about the electrolytes.

    However--

You don't need to eat salt while running to maintain the right balance.  You can maintain healthy electrolytes by drinking sports drinks designed to replace electrolytes, or there are plenty of gels/jelly beans/bars long-distance runners consume that replace electrolytes.

hint: the only time you really need to drink sports drinks is during and after exercise.  Before exercise and while hydrating during the day, water is the best way to hydrate.

  3. Gatorade... Is it in you?

  4. "The key to retaining water during exercise is to take in salt to replace the salt you lose in your sweat. Until recently, many scientists did not appreciated how important salt is to retaining fluid in your body. Thirst is a late sign of dehydration. You lose water during exercise primarily through sweating, and sweat contains a far lower concentration of salt than blood. So exercisers lose far more water than salt, causing the concentration of salt in the blood to rise. A person will not feel thirsty until the concentration of salt in the blood rises high enough to trip off thirst osmoreceptors in the brain and it takes a loss of between 2 and 4 pints of fluid to do that."
