Will this work for a heat protection table pad?

I am looking to make a table pad to protect my dining room table, as I do not want to spend $250 buying a custom one. Do you think the following would work or do you have a better idea.

The base will be felted to protect the table,

on top of the felt will be a layer of corrugated card board,

above this will be a layer of 1/4" foam core card (often used for displays)

above this another layer of corugated card (90 degrees to the first for strength)

and then the top/ sides will be wood patterned vinyl fabric, offering protection from spills.

Do you think this will offer full protection from hot plates/ spills etc. How would you do it?

Thanks

  1. Anything that you place on top of the table will work, but in a very limited way. A quality pad from table pad xpress will offer you protection up to 550 degrees. If you have a nice table and want to protect your investment, check out my website.

  2. Your plan is a good one however there could be some flaws as I see it. The foam could melt if you sat something really hot on the pad.  At the very least if something heavy is put on it it could compress. So the Thanksgiving turkey could sink into the pad and be lower than the rest of the table. I would strength test the foam before using it. The vinyl fabric could melt with very little heat. Just make sure of these things before you invest in the materials and the effort required to make this.

Use an exacto knife to cut the materials so they are cut totally to spec.Remember that cardboard also can compress so you could end up with a lumpy table cover.  But I think that if you test all these things you could get away with it.

  3. I would personally recommend purchasing a table pad from the table pad factory. They are wholesale table pad manufactures and there prices are amazing. There table pads have a 650 degree heatshield and a lifetime warranty. Depending on the size of your table the table pad factory should definitly be less than $250. They start at $125 plus delivery.

  4. I think that your solution will offer better protection than any commercial product would.
