Without going into details on HOW I got to this point,I have a problem. My doc,a Hindu always has me do anything wrong with his house,as I am general handyman, but cannot work every day or all day anymore due to health, and I am only one he trusts.I have done many things for him.Something I don't know anything about is tile, and especially shower pans and such. So,I have been painting his house slowly lately, and he brings me to the upstairs shower, said it's leaking downstairs. My first thought was "showerpan"though I know nothing about it,I've heard it enough to suggest that, and told him to call someone that does that.I don't want to s***w it up.Hetells me an "expert"online told him to get "drimmel(sp?)"bits, get the grout out of the piece of tile that meets the shower floor, and fill with silicone caulk. So,now my question. What is a "drimmel bit" and Has anyone ever heard of this solution? The man is insistent,he won't let anyone but me in his house.I don't want to waste his money.

  1. Need some more details about the base.Is this a preformed shower base?If it is then i seriously doubt the leak is coming from there. If it is tile all the way down and on the floor Then good luck finding the leak as it could be anywhere on the surface or on the wall.is it possible to get underneath from the first floor to view the base?

The item is Dremel, not drimmel, this may be why you have not found anything on it. As for the leak it could be several things.

Leaking through the tiles around the tray!

The waste area where the water leaves the tray!

It could also be a joint in the pipe under the tray between the waste trap and the waste pipe!

How to resolve the leak. First find you need to find it.

If it is obvious that the leak is coming through the tile then scrape out the grout clean the area make sure its dry and clean and apply a silicone sealant along the joint to reseal.

If its not obvious then you will need to look for where it is leaking.

There may be a section of floor next to the shower tray as an access panel for maintenance. (If not you will need to discern how the shower tray was fitted and reverse this process).   Once you have access put your hand under the tray see and try and find the leak.

Also check out this website it also has a forum.

  3. a drimmel is a small rotary tool nd a drimmel bit is one of the many small sanding bits that go on the end.you should be able to get both drill and bit inexpensively.

  4. I think you mean a dremel bit - you know a small rotary tool with different types of bits available for it.  Ryobi also makes a small rotary tool.
