Question:

Will turning the breaker off for my stove save me energy when I'm not using it?

I seriously doubt it would help, I just wanted to make sure.

  1. Not likely.   You would only save if your stove uses power for something other than the heating elements (e.g. a clock).

    Even in those cases, the savings for a stove are usually very small, and you have to balance the savings with the convenience provided (i.e. is it worth to desconect if I am having to reset the clock all the time?  Alternatively, if you do not need a clock there then by all means power off and save $$ and help the environment!)

    The reason most people think about disconnecting appliances is because of standby power (for example, a TV  that needs to be always "listening" for the remote control).  In a modern house this "phantom load" caused by electronic equipment can account for almost 10% of the power bill.   A stove, with very little electronics on it, is not likely to account for much.  Stereos, TV and other electronics are usually bigger culprits.
