I assume you are adding a tap light dimmer switch to your existing 3-way lamp; so no, it won't mess up your lamp with a regular bulb.

And of course don't use a fluorescent bulb with any dimmer unless it's made and rated for it.

Use only incandescent bulbs.

those 3 way tap light dimmers are made to use a regular bulb,,,do not use a flourescent.
