Question:

Will using a soldering iron set off a smoke alarm?

The soldering iron is being used for general purposes(soldering two wires together and simple tasks like that). This is a 100/140 watt soldering iron. If the soldering iron does set off smoke alarms is there a way to prevent that?

  1. make sure the iron and the area is far away from a fire alarm...if there is a lot of smoke make sure you're in a room with a window to open.

  2. It depends on how sensitive your smoke alarm is.  Generally, smoke alarms are designed to detect "large particle" smoke. The resin in solder could fall into this category.  Since it sounds as though you are only planning to use the iron on specific occasions, I would test it first.  If it DOES set off the alarm, simply remove the alarm cover and remove the battery before using the soldering iron next time.  Be SURE to reconnect the smoke alarm after though!  It could save your life in a REAL fire!

  3. i dont think so...soldering iron dont heat up that much

  4. A soldering iron shouldnt set off a smoke alarm if it is used properly.

  5. If your not stood right underneath the fire alarm then it should be fine.

  6. it doesnt usually generate enough smoke to do that so i would think so. I had to use a sodering iron all the time on stuff of mine, specially when i was using electric motors.

  7. Nope.

Unless it's a really BIG soldering iron being used on a really LARGE piece of soldering wire!

  8. no they dont unless your 2 inches away from it lol

  9. First of all, I would make sure you have proper ventilation.

The last thing you want to do, is breathe in any of the fumes... You will be exposing yourself to heavy metal fumes, such as lead and other oxides...

If you have proper ventilation, you should be just fine...

But PLEASE, make sure to have enough ventilation... put a fan near the work area....

  10. I don't think it will set the alarm off. I've soldered in the house and my alarms have not gone off.
