  1. Woodtick and Carl have good answers.

    I might add that not using water won't help extend the life time. Turning the water tempature down to a minimum for your use will help a little, but not much.

    As stated, replacing the Anode is best. Replace the heating elements when the quit will extend the lifetime.

    Most important...make sure you keep the OUTSIDE of the waterheater dry. Rust on the outer shell is a killer of most heaters.

    But why have one , if your scared to use it!

  4. Not necessarily.  You can extend the life by draining a gallon or so of water monthly to remove sediment, and changing the anode rod as required.  Hope this helps.
