Question:

Will using two blackout fabric sheets for projection screen look ok?

I'm constructing a projection screen for my backyard to use next weekend - they only seem to make blackout in 54 width - would the picture still look good on a 3000 lumen projector if I put the two sheets together? Should I tape the line between them with white duct tape? Or are there any other materials I could use that would show the picture nicely on a 3000 lumen DLP projector.

  1. If you tape the two together you will probably see a line where they join. If that is acceptable then go for it. Other options are just thick white cloth, white laminate counter top material or painting any flat surface with a matte white paint.

I made a screen in my home theater out of matte white Formica (laminate) and it looks awesome. They come in 4' x 8' sheets. You might be able to order bigger sheets.

You could conceivably take plywood sheets and make a screen to your desired size. Then fill all seams and grooves with wood filler, sand it smooth, prime it extra well, then paint it white. All you need is a flat smooth surface.

If you use fabric or plastic you will have to make sure that it is tight and wrinkle free. You'll need to stretch it over frame almost like a painter's canvas.
