  1. Wednesday, August 13

    Venus passes Saturn, 3:02 p.m.

Venus passes Saturn by the apparent distance of about a fifth of a degree, less than half the width of the Moon. Unfortunately, the exact moment occurs in broad daylight for North America, but the two are still close in the western twilight after sunset. They are quite low to the horizon, in Leo. Venus, which is considerably the brighter, is just to the left of Saturn. Mercury, which is brighter than Saturn but still much outshone by Venus, is about three degrees to the lower right. Mars, even dimmer than Saturn, is 17 degrees to the upper left of the Venus-Saturn pair. Due to the nearness to the horizon and short period of visibility, this is a difficult observation and requires an unobstructed view to the West. Binoculars are helpful, but be sure not to use them until the Sun is fully down.

  2. OMG, where did you hear that? I want to know the answer to that to lol

  3. It depends which hemisphere you are in at the time and whether it's cloudy or not.

  4. Venus is currently in the evening sky, and will stay there for the remainder of 2008.

Just at or after sunset, look west.  It will be the brightest "starlike" object in the sky.

The only thing that can prevent it from being visible on the specific evening you state, would be cloud cover.

  5. You need to look in the western sky as soon as possible after sunset as it will set within an hour of the sun. Binoculars should help you find it more quickly, but wait until the sun is out of the way in case you should accidentally point the binoculars towards it! Venus will provide a useful marker for finding Mercury, which will be about 1.5 degrees (3 moon-widths) to the lower right on the 17th. You might even pick up Saturn, which will be a bit farther to the right.

  6. Venus will be visible for a short time after sunset, near where the sun went below the horizon.

  7. Look between Leo & Virgo.
