  1. As fhotoace said, the Vivitar 1900 will kill your Nikon D40. Unless, however, you invest in the WEIN Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe Safe Sync.

Of course you'll have to use all manual controls when using the Vivitar flash. You will need to set the correct flash sync shutter speed and the f-stop.

It would be much easier and you'd get better results if you bought the Nikon flash dedicated to your camera.

  2. Yes, but you won't have access to any of the TTL features a flash that is made for your camera will.

You will have to manually set the shutter speed. The aperture will have to be set according to the guide number of the flash and speed of the film.

  3. NO.

The maximum trigger voltage the D40 supports is 12v.  The Vivitar 1900 has a trigger voltage of between 90v and 125v depending upon its output.  This will fry the electronics on your camera and that is not covered by the Nikon's warranty
